Find the original barrier

In brickwork, older bituminous or slate DPCs may be visible in a bed joint. Modern membranes can be easier to spot. Render, paint and paving can hide the external line.

Check what crosses it

Render, internal plaster, screeds, raised soil and cavity debris can all allow moisture to reach masonry above the barrier. Removing the bridge may restore the intended separation.

Old does not automatically mean failed

A traditional DPC can remain effective for a very long time. Age alone is not evidence that it needs replacing. Conversely, some older buildings were constructed without one.

Choose the method to suit the wall

Chemical injection is straightforward in many brick walls but irregular stone or rubble cores may need a different approach. The treatment should follow the construction rather than the product brochure.
